Our Friend….. E. Tunney Maher Respect, honor, devoted, caring and giving… are words that help to describe Tunney Maher. Whether you knew Tunney for years or just met him once, you knew there was something very special about him. Tunney began St. Matthew’s C.Y.O. 44 years ago, and never looked back. He began with one boy’s team and eventually it grew to more than 10 teams of both boys and girls. For years, St. Matthew C.Y.O was considered the model organization in the Archdiocese of New York, thanks to Tunney’s hard work and dedication. He worked tirelessly and gave more time to St. Matthew C.Y.O. then anyone could imagine. Often he would gather 40-50 kids on the Sunday night of a holiday weekend to play arena football. We would shake our heads in disbelief that anyone could have this much energy. Sounds crazy, right? No it wasn’t crazy. It was Tunney at his best. This January Jam Tournament was another one of Tunney’s ideas. Let’s play 30 games in 2 gyms over 3 days in the middle of our CYO season, and let’s invite teams from Boston too. Sounds crazy, right? No, it was just Tunney at his best. I hope this gives you a small idea of who Tunney was and what he has meant to us. He gave and gave and gave and when there was nothing left to give, he found a new cause to support. If we all volunteer some of our time to help the youth and elderly, as Tunney so often did, together we may be able to accomplish 1/10 of what Tunney did in a year. Thank you for your continued support and have a great tournament. The E. Tunney Maher January Jam Committee
